When people ask me what kind of a personality does a Scottish Fold have, I simply tell them to imagine a Circus Ring with lots of clowns driving around in their tiny cars.  That's how it is in my house anyway.

Over the years, I have had every Scottish Fold in my home do something humorous in one form or another.  It could be something as simple as sitting or sleeping in a most undignified way to learning how to open the doors or turning on the stove (ok, so the latter is more ingenious then funny).  I have even had a couple of my Folds open their mouths very wide and literally make faces at me while I am trying to get a good picture of them.

Sometimes in life though, people tend to overlook potential and go straight for the obvious.  Such was the case with a Scottish Fold I named Lucy.  I would compare Lucy's kitten hood like that of a child in the foster care system and was the product of a collaboration between two breeders.  Lucy was born in one household and then, at 4-5 months old, was sent back to live in the home where her mother was born.  While Lucy was very well cared for in her former homes, her personality seemed to turn everyone off. Lucy is a red tabby and had the typical "diva" attitude of most female cats with the red gene along with a big chip on her shoulder.  The first time I saw Lucy was at a cat show which did not have the most positive outcome since Lucy spent most of her time hissing.  Not long after the cat show fiasco, I went to the home of the breeder that owned Lucy, I walked in the door and saw Lucy laying on a cat post and after her initial hiss, Lucy looked me straight in the eyes and I saw something no one else had ever noticed.  There was something very special behind those eyes and I could tell by the look on her face (plus the fact that she didn't run away from me) that Lucy had made a connection with me as I did with her.  That was it.  I turned to her owner and stated, without doubt, that I was going to take Lucy home with me.

I brought Lucy home when she was about 6 months old and she immediately went into defensive mode after seeing all the other cats in our house.  To prove she was not to be butt sniffed, followed around or bullied in any way; Lucy would hiss with great assurance at any Fold that came within 2 feet of her personal space.  Of course, this gesture worked out just fine for Lucy because our existing cats just walked away with a look on their faces as if they were saying.... "Whatever."

One of the most humorous, laugh out loud antics I have ever seen was when our newly acquired little diva took exception to the realistic looking stuffed cat laying on the sofa.  One night Lucy decided to relax on the sofa when she encountered the blue stuffed cat that resembled, with great detail, a British Shorthair.  With her back slightly arched, Lucy hissed at this cat to let it know it should vacate her space ASAP.  The stuffed cat never moved a whisker or blinked an eye.  Lucy gave out another warning hiss which, of course, didn't faze the stuffed cat in the least.  All of a sudden, with the fury of a woman badly scorned, Lucy started to beat the arrogance out of this obstinate cat that wouldn't back down, then made a noise resembling disgust and finally jumped off the sofa.  Not more then 15 minutes later Lucy was back on the sofa and after two hiss warnings, preceded to slap the stuffed cat profusely in the head as if to try to knock some sense into it.  By this time, Patrick and I were laughing hysterically.  We have lived with Lucy for a few years now and in that time I have uncovered what I saw in her the first time our eyes met.

Lucy has a very quirky and funny side to her which is not as obvious as her fellow Fold housemates.  If anything new hits the floor, Lucy is the first cat to stake claim to it by laying on the object, whether it's a bed, box, piece of paper, grocery bag, rug........  It's kind of hard to describe Lucy's quirky side which will show up discreetly while I am going through my daily routine.  I haven't had any more "belly laugh" incidents with Lucy, but in her own little way, she seems to do something silly every day that brings a huge smile to my face.

She sat on the cat post intently staring at the painting for about an hour.
